Welcome to Our Music Program

Musical experiences contribute to the growth and development of children.  The music program at R.J. Hawkey provides students with opportunities to acquire the musical skills and understanding needed to make music an enjoyable and meaningful part of their lives.  Carefully selected musical activities aid in the development of social skills and attitudes, cooperation, a sense of responsibility, leadership, consideration and respect for others, communication, self control and a positive self-concept.

Both the Orff and Kodaly methods of teaching are incorporated into the music program at R. J.  However, the main emphasis is on the Orff approach to Music Education because it is holistic, experiential and process oriented.  It is for all children, not just the most musically or intellectually gifted and encompasses aural, visual and kinaesthetic learners.  It combines the elements of speech, rhythm, movement, dance, playing instruments and song. A structured, sequential development of knowledge and skills encourages joyful participation, creativity and personal musical growth from all participants.  Children learn through doing, exploring and improvising  They are active participants in an integrated, guided process, one which allows for differing musical abilities.

Along with their regular musical activities, every student at R.J. (K-5)  also participates in a musical performance.   The ACP students (grade 1 - 5) will present a Christmas musical.   The grade 1-3 students in the mainstream program will perform at Christmas also and the grade 4 and 5 students will perform in March.   Please see the school calendar for the dates and times. The students perform twice so that working parents do not miss the opportunity to see their child(ren) on stage.  The first performance is at 1:30 in the afternoon and the second is at 6:30 in the evening.  The Kindergarten students perform for their parents at the end of May. They perform only once so mark your calendars.

Grade 3, 4 and 5 students have the option to join the Senior Choir which meets every Tuesday at lunch for rehearsals. The Senior Choir prepares the Remembrance Day Ceremony (November), performs for the school at Christmas (December), takes a field trip to Luxstone Manor to sing for the seniors who live there ( December and April) and present their year end assembly for the school in April.

Grade 1 and 2 students have the opportunity to join the Junior Choir which meets every Thursday beginning in January.  We meet for lunch, clean up and then enjoy our singing time.  They will have a year end performance for the school and parents at the end of March.
