Calgary Reads

RJ Hawkey has partnered with an amazing organization called CALGARY READS.  Since 1998, Calgary Reads has championed the cause of Early Literacy in schools through family/community engagement and well structured school programs, to help match volunteers with young readers to spread the joy of reading.

Rocky View Schools has worked closely with Calgary Reads for several years and has recently branded the program ROCKY VIEW READS to help RVS take on a new level of ownership to impact students across the division.

RJ Hawkey has implemented the "Wee Read" program to match skilled volunteers with Kindergarten students who could benefit from increased read aloud opportunities. Our school's commitment to engaging families, led to a school wide Literacy Night where families could learn about ways to help their child with their literacy skills at home.  We are always looking for ways to partner with the families at RJ Hawkey, and look forward to a tradition of hosting Family Literacy events at the school for years to come.

We are continually looking for volunteers who feel passionate about literacy and enjoy working with young children.  So, if you enjoy reading and have an hour or two each week to share with a child, we invite you to help us in our mission to help RJ Hawkey’s students gain literacy skills, along with increased confidence, self-esteem, and hope.  This would be the perfect volunteer opportunity for any seniors/Grandparents that are looking to find a worthwhile contribution to the community and school!

If you have any questions about the program at our school or would like to volunteer for this program, please contact Janet Bang at 403-948-3939 or jbang@rockyview.ab.ca.
