Welcome to Our Music Program

Musical experiences contribute to the growth and development of children.  The music program at R.J. Hawkey provides students with opportunities to acquire the musical skills and understanding needed to make music an enjoyable and meaningful part of their lives.  Carefully selected musical activities aid in the development of social skills and attitudes, cooperation, a sense of responsibility, leadership, consideration and respect for others, communication, self control and a positive self-concept.

Both the Orff and Kodaly methods of teaching are incorporated into the music program at R. J.  However, the main emphasis is on the Orff approach to Music Education because it is holistic, experiential and process oriented.  It is for all children, not just the most musically or intellectually gifted and encompasses aural, visual and kinaesthetic learners.

Orff's philosophy is based on solid, pedagogical principles.  A structured, sequential development of knowledge and skills encourages joyful participation, creativity and personal musical growth from all participants.  Children learn through doing, exploring and improvising  They are active participants in an integrated, guided process, one which allows for differing musical abilities.  In the Orff approach no child is neglected.

The Orff philosophy combines the elements of speech, rhythm, movement, dance and song.

Along with their regular musical activities, every student at R.J. (K-4) also participates in a musical for their grade level.  Please see the school calendar for the dates and times. The students perform twice so that working parents do not miss the opportunity to see their child(ren) on stage.  The first performance is at 1:30 in the afternoon and the second is at 6:30 in the evening.

Extracurricular musical activities that the students have the option to join are the Senior Choir (grade 3 and 4) or the Junior Choir (grade 1 and 2).  Each group meets once a week in preparation for performances at Christmas and again at the end of the choir season in April.  Senior Choir meets every Tuesday lunch and Junior Choir meets every Thursday  lunch.

Professional Performances

One or two performances by professional actors and musicians will be brought to the school for the students to enjoy. The first performance will be on Monday, October 17 at 8:30 - 9:30 am.  The Canadiana Musical Theatre Co. will be performing THE KLONDIKE RAG for the students.  Parents are encouraged and welcome to attend.
