Welcome to Our Music Program

Musical experiences contribute to the growth and development of children.  The music program at R.J. Hawkey provides students with opportunities to acquire the musical skills and understanding needed to make music an enjoyable and meaningful part of their lives.  Carefully selected musical activities aid in the development of social skills and attitudes, cooperation, a sense of responsibility, leadership, consideration and respect for others, communication, self control and a positive self-concept.

Both the Orff and Kodaly methods of teaching are incorporated into the music program at R. J.  However, the main emphasis is on the Orff approach to Music Education because it is holistic, experiential and process oriented.  It is for all children, not just the most musically or intellectually gifted and encompasses aural, visual and kinaesthetic learners.

Orff's philosophy is based on solid, pedagogical principles.  It combines the elements of speech, rhythm, movement, dance, playing instruments and song. A structured, sequential development of knowledge and skills encourages joyful participation, creativity and personal musical growth from all participants.  Children learn through doing, exploring and improvising  They are active participants in an integrated, guided process, one which allows for differing musical abilities.  In the Orff approach no child is neglected.

Along with their regular musical activities, every student at R.J. (K-6)  also participates in a musical for their grade level.  This year the grade 1 and 2 students in the mainstream program will perform at Christmas and the grade 3 and 4 students will perform in May.  The students in the ACP will perform at Christmas and again for Easter.  Please see the school calendar for the dates and times. The students perform twice so that working parents do not miss the opportunity to see their child(ren) on stage.  The first performance is at 1:30 in the afternoon and the second is at 6:30 in the evening.

Extracurricular

Grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 students have the option to join the Senior Choir which meets every Tuesday at lunch for rehearsals. The Senior Choir prepares the Remembrance Day Ceremony (November), performs for the school at Christmas (December), takes a field trip to Luxstone Manor to sing for the seniors who live there (April) and present their year end assembly for the school (May).
